JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE:  Family and Consumer Science (Harrisonburg High School position)

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Graduate of an accredited college or university in an approved program of study

 

  1. Holds or is eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Family and Consumer Science.

 

  1. Possesses outstanding knowledge and skill in the assigned instructional area and demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching and learning in a project based environment

 

  1. Strong communication skills and the ability to guide 9-12th grade students through complex problems as they develop new skills and understanding.   

 

  1. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse students, staff, parents, and the public

 

  1. View feedback and self-reflection as a tool to improve and grow in teacher responsibilities

 

  1. Emotionally mature, objective and sensitive to people and their concerns.  Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and seek collaborative working relationships with students, families, staff, co-workers and community agencies

 

REPORTS TO: Career and Technical Assistant Principal and Principal

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. Facilitates student progress toward a set of unifying goals in the areas of academic achievement, cultural and environmental issues, health and safety, individual and family relations, leadership and workplace ethics, and application of technology.
  2. Building a classroom culture in which students learn family and consumer science competencies through project-based, hands-on, and experiential means
  3. Prepares students to follow a rigorous pathway from novice to advanced classes by motivating them to engage in properly leveled coursework that empowers individuals to think critically and take ownership in their advancement
  4. Interest in developing strong relationships with local human service focused businesses for student mentorship and partnership opportunities
  5. Prepare students for college and career by developing their skills/competencies according to a state-approved list in each course
  6. Knowledge of fundamentals of all VDOE classes associated with Family and Consumer Science, however, the potential classes for the 2019-2020 school year consists of:
    • Nutrition and Wellness
    • Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism
    • Introduction to Early Childhood Education
    • Teachers for Tomorrow
    • English Language Learner elective
  7. Design engaging lessons that inspire students to do their best work
  8. Provide a safe and positive environment focused on student learning
  9. Perform administrative responsibilities including managing equipment used for instruction, keeping records of student competencies, assigning grades, and participating in school and district collaborative teams
  10. Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies
  11. Maintains appropriate state licensure and/or national level; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth)
  12. Responds to telephone, email and in-person requests, inquiries and questions in a professional, polite and responsive manner
  13. Demonstrates good attendance and punctuality
  14. Attends all required meetings
  15. Maintains confidentiality in all matters
  16. Models anti-discriminatory practices in all activities.  Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others
  17. Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations and procedures
