PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: Provides leadership for the certificated staff of the school in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive educational program. Administer the program in accordance with school board policies and administrative rules and regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess or qualify for the Virginia Postgraduate Professional license with a preferred endorsement in Elementary School Administration and Supervision.
- Has a minimum of five years of successful elementary school classroom teaching experience and three years experience as an Assistant Principal as well as a broad knowledge of various instructional techniques and programs.
- Experience working with diverse learning needs and with children that may benefit from alternative learning models is preferred.
- Knowledgeable of the Effective Schools Research and Effective Schools Correlates preferred.
- Proficiency in public speaking and written communication to express and/or exchange ideas.
- Leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and the community.
- Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive to people and their concerns. Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, staff and co-workers.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides an instructional program consistent with the goals and objectives of the school division.
- Provides for the continuing development and implementation of an effective instructional program through classroom supervision and instructional leadership.
- Works with parents, students, teachers, staff, and community members and agencies to continually review discipline and safety policies and regulations in the school in order to maintain effective violence prevention and safety intervention plans.
- Supervises and evaluates the performance of each member of the school staff and establish individual programs for improvement consistent with the division's staff development program.
- Assigns students to classes, programs and activities designed to promote maximum learning.
- Provides a safe school environment for students, teachers and staff.
- Provides leadership to maintain a positive school climate by carrying out an effective, consistent discipline program.
- Utilizes available supervisory personnel as needed to insure an effective instructional program; work with other administrators to provide for horizontal and vertical articulation of the instructional program.
- Fosters effective home-school-community relations and communication by providing opportunities for parents, teachers, and the community to discuss student progress and other mutual concerns, by encouraging community involvement in school activities, by working with advisory groups and other local agencies, and by facilitating community use of the school as established by division policy.
- Advises the Human Resources department of staff needs, and participates in the selection of personnel, employment, assignment, transfer, non-renewal, and dismissal of certificated and classified personnel.
- Responsible for making staff assignments within the building.
- Administers school board policies and regulations.
- Develops and manages a school budget, utilizing all available funds, which is consistent with division instructional and administrative objectives; to supervise the maintenance of accurate bookkeeping and accounting of school funds.
- Provides leadership for staff and curriculum development.
- Maintains proper utilization, care and attractiveness of buildings and grounds.
- Participate in professional enrichment to the extent necessary to keep abreast of developments in elementary school education and in the field of education generally.
- Works with area businesses to develop partnerships between the school and business community.
- Completes various local, state and federal applications, surveys, documents as required.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Actively participates as a member of the Instructional Council.

Attends school board meetings and provides reports on the status of programs and services in areas of primary function at the request of the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Administration and/or the Superintendent.

Participates in the selection of personnel and the assignment of personnel in the areas of responsibility.

Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.

Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.

Responds to telephone, email and in-person requests, inquiries and questions in a professional, polite and responsive manner.

Demonstrates good attendance and punctuality.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.
- Stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel or crouch.
- Travel to schools throughout the division and central office is required.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
- Regular contact with staff members and administrators is required.
- Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
