POSITION SUMMARY:

The music teacher is responsible for teaching general music classes to students in grades 9-12 using state and national standards as a basis for a creative curriculum.  This educator ensures that students engage in enjoyment, appreciation, understanding, creation, and performance of music through a variety of planned experiences which could include listening, creating, singing, performing, responding and connecting to and through music.  In addition, this educator performs other duties directly related to this job description as defined and in conjunction with the building principal and curriculum specialist and leads the staff of the school in the improvement and appreciation of music for the school community. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree.
  2. Possess or qualify for a Virginia Collegiate Professional license with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.
  3. Experience, training, outstanding know, and skill in effectively teaching Music Education to middle and high school students.  Piano education, music technology, and/or strings education is preferred. 
  4. First Aid and CPR certification.
  5. Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  6. Experience working with diverse learning needs and with children that may benefit from alternative learning models is preferred.
  7. Familiarity with racial equity and inclusion frameworks.
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments to improve instructional practices.
  9. Proficiency in the use of a variety of office equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, email, and information system applications.
  10. Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.
  11. Proficiency in business English: spelling, grammar, and spoken language.
  12. Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive to people and their concerns.  Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, co-workers, and the community.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Teaches skills in music literacy, performance, understanding/appreciation, creation, and exploration in music to students in grades 9-12 in alignment with state and national standards.
  2. Plans, executes, and implements a balanced music curriculum and organizes class time so that preparation and instruction can be accomplished.
  3. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the music curriculum to the needs of each student. Encourages students to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible through local, district, and statewide organizations and experiences. 
  4. Utilizes diverse repertoire through the curriculum of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages, cultures, skill levels, and interests of all students. 
  5. Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music and musical equipment to minimize loss
  6. or damage.
  7. Evaluates each student’s musical growth, performance, and musical understanding. Assesses each individual’s contribution through formative, formal, and performance based assessment.
  8. Engages with division music educators to ensure a comprehensive K-12 music education for all students.  
  9. Selects appropriate curriculum through music, books and instructional aids to enhance learning and requisitions for instructional supplies as necessary.
  10. Cooperation with building principal and staff in providing musical programs for the school and community.  Examples include but are not limited to school assemblies, open house, parent meetings, and evening performance programs.
  11. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  12. Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
  13. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  14. Responds to telephone, email and in-person requests, inquiries and questions in a professional, polite and responsive manner.
  15. Serves as role model by developing and effectively maintaining professional boundaries with students and staff at all times.  Ensures respect for the ethical and legal duties in the staff-to-student and administrator-to-staff relationships.
  16. Serves as a role model for others, as an educational leader, by demonstrating good attendance, punctuality, appearance, demeanor, dress and behavior.
  17. Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
  18. Maintains confidentiality in all matters.
  19. Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions, including non-discriminatory and cultural inclusion practices by respecting the worth, dignity and individual beliefs of others.
  20. Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations and procedures.
  21. Effectively performs other duties as assigned by the Principal.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.  Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and community members.  Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.  Regular contact with staff members is required.  Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of licensed personnel.
