PRIMARY FUNCTION:    Provides diagnosis and remediation of student's communication skills.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Possesses or qualify for a Virginia Collegiate Professional license with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.  Preferred – Certificate of Clinical Competence from ASHA.

     

  2. Demonstrated knowledge in assessing student's communication skills and ability to interpret test results meaningfully.

     

  3. Ability to design, implement and evaluate a comprehensive program appropriate to the educational needs of the communicatively impaired student.

     

  4. Knowledge of local, state, and national regulations relative to the speech-language impaired.

     

  5. Proficiency in public speaking and written communication to express and/or exchange ideas.

     

  1. Proficiency in the use of a variety of instructional technology including computers with experience in Microsoft Office, email and other applications.

 

  1. Emotionally mature, objective and sensitive to people and their concerns.  Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain good working relationships with students, families, staff, co-workers and community agencies.

     

    REPORTS TO:  Principal and Director of Exceptional Student Services

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

     

  1. Implements screening and/or referral procedures to identify students needing speech-language evaluation which will include:

     

    1. Screening all students new to the division (all kindergartners and new students entering throughout the year), all preschool children referred within the division and all those referred from private schools.

       

    2. Screening hearing of students new to the division as well as all students in grades 3, 7, and 10.

       

    3. Obtaining a medical evaluation prior to enrollment of students suspected of having an organic impairment.

       

  2. Processes evaluation information which will include:

     

    1. Obtaining diagnostic information through formalized testing and/or observation.

       

    2. Obtaining background and related information from teachers and parents.

       

    3. Submitting a written diagnostic report and recommendations to the eligibility committee.

       

    4. Developing long-range goals for student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).

       

    5. Developing short-term objectives for student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).

       

  3. Implements an appropriate therapy plan based on written objectives which will include:

     

    1. Scheduling and grouping students according to the nature and severity of their communication disorders.

       

    2. Implementing therapy activities in a logical sequence.

       

    3. Using materials compatible with student's age and interest (this includes purchasing and maintaining materials within each school).

       

    4. Serving as a facilitator within the general education classroom when deemed appropriate.

       

  4. Manages program and maintains records which will include.

         

    1. Informing staff of program services.

       

    2. Conferring with parents and teachers of students enrolled in therapy.

       

    3. Maintaining ongoing records of student's performance in order to evaluate student's progress in therapy.

       

    4. Conducting annual review and updating the Individualized Educational Program

       

  5. Serves as a resource person which will include:

     

    1. Providing in-service education to teachers and school staff members on topics relative to communication development and impairments.

       

    2. Assisting with referrals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate.

       

    3. Serving as a consultant.

       

  6. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

     

  7. Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.

     

  8. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.

     

  9. Responds to telephone, email and in-person requests, inquiries and questions in a professional, polite and responsive manner.

     

  10. Demonstrates good attendance and punctuality.

     

  11. Attends all required meetings.

     

  12. Maintains confidentiality in all matters.

     

  13. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.  Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.

     

  14. Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations and procedures.

     

  15. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Exceptional Student Services and/or the Principal.

     

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

     

  1. Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.

 

  1. Stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel or crouch.

 

  1. Regular contact with staff members and administrators is required.

 

  1. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:   200 Day Contract

 

FLSA STATUS:       Exempt

 

SALARY SCALE:  Teacher Salary Scale

 

EVALUATION:       Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of licensed personnel.
