TITLE:         Media Specialist

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:    Develops and implements an instructional media program that will effectively provide the best possible education for each student as well as meet the instructional objectives and needs of each school.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Possesses or qualify for a Virginia Collegiate Professional license with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.

  • Possesses outstanding knowledge and skill in the assigned instructional area with knowledge of acquisition, preparation, and utilization of both print and non-print media and demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching and the learning process.

 

  1.  Demonstrated knowledge of instructional strategies and skills related to scientifically-based research and its implementation.
  2.  Proficiency in public speaking and written communication to express and/or exchange ideas.

 

  • Emotionally mature, objective and sensitive to people and their concerns. Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, staff, co-workers and community agencies.REPORTS TO:   PrincipalESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  1.  Planning and Assessment:

 

  1.  Establishes and implements daily written lesson plans.
    1.  Evaluates student learning and revises instruction accordingly.
    2.  Structures teaching to encourage independent thinking by students.
    3.  Effectively prepares/uses instructional materials and technology resources.

Selects and acquires materials to supplement the curriculum and to meet the individual interest, ability and maturity levels of students.

  1.  Organizes and distributes all media and audio-visual equipment for effective use. 
  2. Participates in curriculum planning and program development and implementation and to develop a close working relationship among teachers, principals, and other media librarians. 
  3. Creates an attractive, positive environment and atmosphere that encourages students and teachers to use the media center. 
  4. Stimulates and guides students in all phases of their reading, viewing, and listening, so that they may effectively assimilate information. 
  5. Provides instruction in cooperation with the staff in media and resource skills.

 

  1. Stays abreast of current technology and utilizes it on a regular basis as part of the media program. 
  2. Provides media center experiences to help students develop satisfactory personal relationships, social attitudes, and vocational interests. 
  3. Conducts in-services with teachers, volunteer personnel (adult and student) and other staff members as well as other staff development activities in the use of audio-visual equipment and materials. 
  4. Acquaints staff and students with the media collection and with new materials. Gets all new materials catalogued and into circulation for student and staff use. 
  5. Assists the principal in ensuring that instructional materials and equipment are used to provide learning experiences compatible with the educational needs of students. 
  6. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

 

  1. Maintains a clean, organized center that projects a positive image to all customers. 
  2. Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.

 

  1. Organizes and disseminates information regarding community reading programs that pro mote reading outside of school hours.
  2. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  3. Responds to telephone, email and in-person requests, inquiries and questions in a professional, polite and responsive manner.
  4. Attends all required meetings. 
  5. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Instructional Supervisor.            PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

 

  1. Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. 
  2. Stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel or crouch. 
  3. Regular contact with staff members and administrators is required. 
  4. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions and meet the physical demands.

  1. EVALUATION:  Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of licensed personnel.
