Great Oak Academy seeks collaborative educators eager to embrace the challenge of creating an innovative 6th-8th grade alternative educational community inspired by Big Picture Schools.   • Possesses or qualify for a Virginia Collegiate Professional license with specific endorsement in 6-8th English, social studies, math and/or science.
  • Commitment to support the social-emotional and academic needs of every child in our diverse student body.

  • Demonstrated classroom and time management skills.
  • Proven ability to work as a member of a professional, collaborative team to create innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

Expectations of teachers at Great Oak Academy

  • Establish an inviting classroom and school culture where student accomplishments are celebrated.
  • Serve as an advisor for 8-14 students, lead a daily advisory, help develop the social-emotional curriculum, support student advisees and regularly communicate with parents.
  • Utilize school-wide, consistent approach to promoting and developing positive student behavior.
  • Teach in ways that are interdisciplinary, interactive, hands-on, project-based, and promote self-discovery and critical thinking. More information can be found at http://www.bigpicture.org/
  • Design and incorporate student demonstrations of learning.
  • Guide students to achieve high academic expectations and use data to inform instruction on an ongoing basis.
  • Emphasize and support literacy and math across all content areas.
  • Collaborate with staff and students to implement consistent community structures and develop traditions at Great Oak Academy.
  • Involve students in mentorships, fieldwork and service-learning that deepen student understanding and interest.
  • Complete narrative progress reports.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, monthly retreats, and yearly training sessions as specified including in the spring and summer prior to opening the school.
  • Chaperone overnight trips with students including outdoor adventures.
  • Be available to students and families for education-related purposes outside of the traditional prescribed school times and days when needed.

REPORTS TO:   Great Oak Academy Director

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  1. Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.
  2. Stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  3. Regular contact with staff members and administrators is required.
  4. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  200 Day Contract

FLSA STATUS:         Exempt

SALARY SCALE:   Teacher Salary Scale

EVALUATION:       Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of licensed personnel.
