POSITION SUMMARY:

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Theater Arts, Drama Education, or related field 
  2. Teaching certification or licensure in drama/theater education.
  3. Previous experience teaching drama/theater to high school students.
  4. Strong knowledge of theater history, dramatic literature, acting techniques, and production processes.
  5. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  6. Ability to inspire and motivate students, fostering their creative expression and artistic growth.
  7. Experience directing theatrical productions and coordinating technical aspects of stagecraft.
  8. Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the theater classroom and productions.
  9. Passion for the arts and a dedication to nurturing a lifelong appreciation for theater in students.
  10. Effectively demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions.
  11. Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  12. Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks.  Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.  Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.
  13. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.  
  14. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  15. Proficiency in the use of a variety of office/instructional equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and email.
  16. Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Curriculum Development: Implement and support a comprehensive drama curriculum that covers various aspects of theater, including acting techniques, improvisation, script analysis, and theatrical production.
  2. Instructional Delivery: Provide engaging and interactive instruction to students, incorporating a range of teaching methods such as workshops, group exercises, scene study, and performance projects.
  3. Acting Coaching: Guide students in developing their acting skills, including character development, voice projection, stage presence, and emotional expression.
  4. Directing Productions: Direct and oversee school productions, from selecting scripts and casting roles to coordinating rehearsals, set design, costumes, and technical aspects of the production.
  5. Performance Preparation: Prepare students for performances and competitions, offering feedback, rehearsal guidance, and support to ensure they deliver polished and compelling performances.
  6. Classroom Management: Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment where students feel supported, respected, and encouraged to take creative risks.
  7. Cultural Appreciation: Introduce students to a diverse range of theatrical styles, genres, playwrights, and cultural perspectives, fostering an understanding and appreciation for the richness of theater arts.
  8. Collaboration: Collaborate with other teachers, staff, and community members to integrate drama into interdisciplinary projects, school events, and extracurricular activities.
  9. Professional Development: Stay current with developments in theater education, attending workshops, conferences, and training sessions to enhance teaching skills, theatrical knowledge, and directing techniques.
  10. Community Engagement: Engage with the local community by organizing theater productions, hosting performances, participating in drama festivals, and facilitating partnerships with local theaters and arts organizations.
  11. Takes all industry standard precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  12. Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
  13. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  14. Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
  15. Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
  16. Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations, procedures, and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
  17. Effectively performs other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.  Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and the school community.  Regular contact with staff members is required.  Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of administrative or licensed personnel.
