School Nurse

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides health services and leadership in establishing a complete and effective program of school health.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

  1. Works with staff as a consultant in defining the health needs of students and in planning the health education program and health services needed to meet them.
  2. Provides extra health and dental resource material for the teachers.
  3. Provides individual health instruction and emotional guidance for the individual student.
  4. Supplies and adequately maintains the school medical clinic.
  5. Maintains current and accurate medical records on each student.
  6. Administers individual screening of vision, hearing and scoliosis, and evaluate, refer and follow-up as required by Virginia school law and school board regulations.
  7. Assists with pre-school registration and interpret health requirements as required by the school board and administrative regulations.
  8. Makes medical inspections and identify medical problems. When a physical defect is found the information will be shared with other appropriate school personnel.
  9. Reviews health appraisals and provides follow-up of all reported deficiencies.
  10. Approves early dismissals recommendations for health reasons.
  11. Assumes responsibility, in the absence of a physician, for the first aid care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness.
  12. Supervises all medicine brought to school by students and provide medication only as directed by division policy and regulation.
  13. Implements school board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases and infested conditions.
  14. Makes home visits to assist with health related absentee problems
  15. Attends conferences in relation to home, school and community health problems of the student.
  16. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  17. Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
  18. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  19. Responds to telephone, email and in-person requests, inquiries and questions in a professional, polite and responsive manner.
  20. Demonstrates good attendance and punctuality.
  21. Attends all required meetings.
  22. Maintains confidentiality in all matters.
  23. Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions, including non-discriminatory and cultural inclusion practices by respecting the worth, dignity and individual beliefs of others.
  24. Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations and procedures.
  25. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or the Chief Officer for Student Support.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduate of an accredited Register Nursing Program.
  2. Holds an active RN license with the Virginia Department of Health Professionals, without documented reprimand, to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  3. Two years successful nursing experience with the care of school aged children as a primary responsibility.
  4. Proficiency in public speaking and written communication to express and/or exchange ideas.
  5. Proficiency in the use of a variety of instructional technology including computers with experience in Microsoft Office, email and other applications.
  6. Emotionally mature, objective and sensitive to people and their concerns. Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, staff, co-workers and community agencies.
  7. Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  8. Experience working with diverse learning needs and with children that may benefit from alternative learning models is preferred.
  9. Familiarity with racial equity and inclusion frameworks.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.  Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and community members.  Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.  Regular contact with staff members is required.  Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of licensed personnel.
