POSITION SUMMARY: 

To develop in each student an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each student to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of students in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each student’s ability.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Possesses or qualify for a Virginia Collegiate Professional license with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.
  2. Possesses outstanding knowledge and skill in the assigned instructional area and demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching and the learning process.
  3. Demonstrates knowledge of instructional strategies and skills related to scientifically-based research and its implementation.
  4. Proficiency in public speaking and written communication to express and/or exchange ideas.
  5. Emotionally mature, objective and sensitive to people and their concerns. Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, staff, co-workers and community agencies.

 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  3. Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
  4. Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge’s, and strategies of formal sports, games rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  5. Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student, to the extent feasible.
  6. Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to insure the overall safety of students.
  7. Maintains control of storage and use of school owned property.
  8. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
  9. Evaluates each student’s growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports.
  10. Maintains professional competence through in service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
    Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
  11. Maintain records related to assigned students and activities. 
  12. Monitor and assist in evaluating student progress. 
  13. Appropriately manage student behavior. 
  14. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information. 
  15. Observe health and safety regulations. 
  16. Demonstrate adaptability to changing circumstances and priorities within the learning environment. 
  17. Plan and organize work. 
  18. Meet schedules and timelines.  
  19. Perform routine clerical tasks. 
  20. Learn to utilize a variety of appropriate speech/language instructional materials and procedures. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. 
  21. Maintain a work pace appropriate to the position. 
  22. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults..
  23. Performs related duties as assigned.
  24. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.  
  25. Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  26. Experience working with diverse learning needs and with children that may benefit from alternative learning models is preferred.
  27. Familiarity with racial equity and inclusion frameworks.
  28. Proficiency in business English: spelling, grammar, and spoken language.
  29. Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive to people and their concerns.  Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, co-workers, and the community.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.  Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and community members.  Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.  Regular contact with staff members is required.  Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of licensed personnel.
