Position Summary:

The K-12 Science Coordinator assumes the responsibility for curriculum development and instructional coordination of science K-12.

Qualifications:

 

  1. A minimum of five years of successful teaching and leadership experience in public education, three years of which shall have been in a leadership capacity.
  2. Eligible for a Collegiate Professional license with an endorsement in the assigned field of instruction (preferred endorsement in Administration and Supervision).
  3. Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  4. Experience working with diverse learning needs and with children who may benefit from alternative learning models is preferred.
  5. Familiarity with racial equity and inclusion frameworks.
  6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.  
  7. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments to improve instructional practices.
  8. Proficiency in the use of a variety of office equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, email, and information system applications.
  9. Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.
  10. Proficiency in business English: spelling, grammar, and spoken language.
  11. Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive to people and their concerns.  Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, co-workers, and the community.

 

Essential Functions:

 

  1. Creates and updates curriculum guides and division assessments aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning, district policies, state and federal regulations, current research, and best practices in the field.
  2. Support building-level accreditation by providing timely disaggregated data and analysis of state and division assessments, participating in quarterly data meetings, and providing instructional feedback.
  3. Coordinates and facilitates professional learning and ongoing coaching to build teacher knowledge, skills, and capacity with effective science instruction.
  4. Manage a budget to facilitate equitable distribution of instructional materials and teacher professional development across schools.
  5. Work with the instructional team, including middle school Science/STEM specialists, to integrate their areas of specialization into a cohesive and forward-thinking instructional program for all students.
  6. Collaborates with the K-12 STEM Director to ensure seamless integration of STEM content.
  7. Maintain ongoing communication with principals, science department leaders, PLCs/CLTs, lead teachers, and grade-level teams (as appropriate).
  8. Assesses existing instructional programs and identifies curriculum needs in collaboration with principals and teachers in the areas of Science.
  9. Develops systems and procedures that ensure all students are learning to high levels and are given opportunities to learn in a creative and innovative learning environment
  10. Keeps abreast of current research and practices in Science. 
  11. Interprets educational philosophy, instructional programs, and policies of the school division in areas of primary function to staff, parents, and citizens.
  12. Informs the Director of Innovation for Instruction and Leadership of the progress, effectiveness, and needs of the division's instructional programs in the area of science.
  13. Coordinates and oversees textbook adoptions and supplementary materials procurement, including online platforms, for science.
  14. Develops and monitors the instructional budget for Science.
  15. Provides support and resources in the area of Science to teachers and principals.
  16. Periodically attends school board meetings and provides reports on the status of programs and services in areas of primary function at the request of the Chief Academic Officer.
  17. Serves as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for the division and oversees the Chemical Hygiene plan for all secondary schools. 
  18. Assists in the selection of personnel and their assignment in the primary area of responsibility. 
  19. Has the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  20. Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions, including non-discriminatory and cultural inclusion practices by respecting the worth, dignity, and individual beliefs of others.
  21. Takes all industry-standard precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  22. Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
  23. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  24. Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
  25. Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
  26. Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations, procedures, and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
  27. Effectively performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Innovation for Instruction & Leadership 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.  Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and community members.  Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Occasional travel with students on field trips as necessary.  Attendance at evening and weekend student or staff activities, Parent Teacher Organization meetings, and other functions, as required.  Regular contact with staff members and parents/guardians is required.  Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of administrative or licensed personnel.
